Rock-filled cage walls that let water through instead of building pressure behind a solid face.

Gabion Retaining Walls in Auckland

Gabion walls bring a distinctive look and genuine functionality together, using wire cages filled with rock to create a retaining structure that's both permeable and visually striking. Our gabion retaining wall service is a great fit for Auckland properties dealing with drainage-heavy sites, since the open structure allows water to pass through rather than building up pressure behind a solid wall. This makes gabion an especially practical choice on sections with poor natural drainage or where water management is a genuine concern. Beyond the functional benefits, gabion walls suit a more natural, textured aesthetic that works well in garden settings or contemporary landscape designs. We handle the full installation, from cage assembly and placement through to rock filling, ensuring the finished wall is stable, well-drained, and built to hold up against Auckland's wetter months.

What We Deliver

Gabion Walls, Designed Around Your Property

01

Our Gabion Wall Installation Process

Gabion walls rely on mass and good packing rather than mortar, so the way the cages are built and filled decides how the wall performs. This is how our team puts one in.

Site and drainage assessment — we look at where water is coming from and how a permeable wall can work with it rather than against it.

Base preparation — we excavate and compact a level, stable base, since gabions settle unevenly if the ground under them does.

Cage assembly — baskets are assembled square and laced tightly, because a cage that racks out of shape will bulge once it is loaded.

Placement and tying — each basket is set in position and tied to its neighbours so the whole run behaves as one structure.

Rock filling — rock is hand-packed at the faces for a tidy look and machine-filled through the middle to keep voids down.

Bracing, lids and finishing — internal bracing wires go in, lids are closed and laced, and we backfill and tidy behind the wall.

Why Choose Our Gabion Wall Team in Auckland

Gabion is genuinely the right answer on some Auckland sites and the wrong answer on others, and we'll tell you which one yours is. If your section holds water, sits at the bottom of a slope, or has a stream or overland flow path running through it, a permeable wall solves a problem a solid wall would make worse.

The face is what everyone sees, so we hand-pack it. Machine-dumping rock into a basket is quicker, but you end up with an uneven face full of gaps. Our crew packs the visible faces by hand and fills the core with the machine, which gives you a tidy wall without blowing out the labour cost.

We also help you choose the rock. Greywacke, river stone and recycled concrete all look completely different once they're in the cage, and the size grading matters just as much as the type — too small and it escapes through the mesh, too large and the face looks gappy.

What Makes Our Auckland Gabion Wall Builders Unique?

We use properly galvanised or PVC-coated mesh rated for the job. Auckland's damp, and coastal sites are harder again, so cheap wire is a false economy — the rock outlives the cage and you end up with a pile of stone where your wall used to be.

We brace the baskets internally as we fill them. Bracing wires stop the faces bowing outward under the weight of the rock, and they're the difference between a wall that stays crisp and one that bellies out within a season.

Gabions also give you options beyond a plain wall, and we build them. Stepped terraces, seating walls, planter edges and feature panels all work well in the same system, and it's usually cheaper to build them at the same time as your retaining wall than to come back later.
