Our Boulder Wall Construction Process
A boulder wall holds because of weight, friction and lean — not because anything is fixed to anything. That puts all the skill in the placement, and this is how we approach it.
Slope and soil assessment — we work out the retained height, the batter angle, and the rock size the wall needs.
Rock selection — we source boulders sized for the job, since undersized rock on a tall wall never stays put.
Excavation and keying in — the base course is set into a trench so the bottom of the wall is locked into the ground.
Machine placement — each rock is placed individually, turned to find its best bearing face, and seated against its neighbours.
Batter and stacking — courses step back as they rise, leaning the wall into the slope rather than standing it straight up.
Drainage and backfill — free-draining material goes in behind the wall, then we grade and tidy the ground above and below.
